PEUGEOT 307: THE NEW
BENCHMARK
The new Peugeot 307 offers outstanding technology, excellent design, and
groundbreaking levels of standard equipment. All this combined has resulted in
the 307 being judged European car of the year 2002 by 55 specialist motoring
journalists representing 21 European countries. It was favored over 29 new cars
and a shortlist of 6 of the best. Initially available as a five door hatchback,
its modern, semi-moonscape design naturally lends itself to outstanding interior
space.
Its sleek, stylish lines which clearly mark it out as a Peugeot disguise the
fact that it is one of the largest cars in its class and taller than any rival.
At 4.20
meters long, 1.73 meters wide and 1.51 meters high, it is considerably bigger
than the Peugeot 306 which it replaces. It is based on the PSA Group's all-new
Platform 2 which will eventually be used to create a number of new models
on the same
2.61-metre wheelbase.
The high roofline and subsequently raised seating position combined with a
distance of three meters from the base of the front screen to the bottom of
the tailgate glass ensures impressive leg- and headroom for five passengers plus
excellent visibility.
The Peugeot 307's windscreen is the largest in class with an area of 1.46 square
metres. The base of the screen finishes over the front axle line, giving the car
a rakish appearance set off by 'cat's-eyes' front lamps like those on the
Peugeot 206 and 607.
A CAR FOR ALL TASTES
Peugeot designers have gone to great effort to create an extremely habitable
passenger area by ensuring easy access, offering a choice of interior trims and
colours to suit all tastes and providing just the right storage spaces and
equipment to meet owners' needs.
The combination of wide-opening doors and a higher-than-normal seating position
makes the Peugeot 307 particularly easy to get into and out of. There is 1.43 meters
of elbow room in the front and 1.46 meters in the rear.
A large, cubic boot, free of suspension intrusions, gives 341 litres of usable
luggage space beneath the parcel shelf and up to 1328 litres with the one-third/
two-thirds split rear backrests lowered to their flat position. The luggage area
contains two hooks
for holding shopping bags securely, a baggage net and a couple of side
partitions. This is supplemented by exceptional storage space within the cabin.
The glove box is air-conditioned, allowing drinks or snacks to be kept cool. It
also includes a number of tailored recesses for small items on the back of the
lockable lid.
There are optional slide-out drawers beneath the front seats for hiding
valuables out of sight. Each front-door pocket is capable of holding a 1.5-litre
drinks bottle upright, while those in the rear will take a half-liter bottle. In
the centre console there are two drinks holders, a CD rack and space for another
drinks bottle. A coin pocket is located on the edge of the driver's seat.
